Thank you for registering your child to participate in our Try Hockey for Free clinic on Saturday March 7th, 2026. The Hampton Roads Whalers and Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex are looking forward to seeing your family at Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex on Saturday!
To make sure you enjoy your first youth hockey experience, below are some helpful tips.
TIME: Try hockey starts at 8:50am and lasts 1 hour. Due to high enrollment numbers, please plan to arrive at the rink at least one (1) hour prior to check-in and to be fitted with equipment to ensure all kids can get onto the ice on time.
WHAT TO EXPECT- Upon arrival at Chilled Ponds (1416 Stephanie Way, Chesapeake, VA 23320), you will be greeted in the front entryway to check in. You will then be guided by a staff member to get skates, equipment, and then to the locker room to change.
WHAT TO BRING: We have skates and a limited amount of equipment available for you to borrow. We encourage those who have access to equipment to please bring it. If you do not have any equipment, you will need to bring:
- A loose-fitting pair of sweatpants or snow pants
- A pair of gloves (they don’t need to be hockey gloves- mittens are fine)
- A helmet (Bike helmets are fine)
- A Smile
What Comes Next?: Chilled Ponds offers an 18-week Hockey Academy Class that begins April 11th. We will also offer a 4 week mini session of Learn to Play Hockey prior to the Hockey Academy. The class is designed to teach the game to your child and prepare them to eventually play on a team in the Whaler Nation Rec league in the fall. If your child enjoys their experience you can register for either the 4 week or 18 Hockey Academy at the event.
